Energy audits simplified and explained: how are MOUSTADAMA’s energy audits conducted?

Conducting a detailed energy audit is the first step to increase efficiency at industrial enterprise level and save money on an energy bill. An energy audit helps identify problem areas in the production chain, and understand potential savings by pinpointing potential Energy Saving Measures (ESM). Energy audits are conducted by trained energy auditors: equipped with special measurements tools, energy auditors perform an assessment of an industry’s energy use and provide a list of recommended energy efficiency upgrades.

To conduct its energy audits at the demonstration projects, MOUSTADAMA follows a three-fold approach that relies on international best practices and the methodology adopted by our consultants. In the first phase, data collection, energy experts compile a preliminary energy usage analysis with a list of rough, potential energy savings and their implementation costs.

The benefits of an energy audit delivered by MOUSTADAMA under the Demonstration Projects:
• A detailed energy audit report, highlighting potential EE/RE interventions;
• A detailed implementation plan for the EE and RE interventions;
• A range of no-cost and low-cost EE and EnMS measures;
• The Demo Enterprises will be assisted to access relevant financial tools that will make their EE/RE intervention economically feasible.

Subsequently, these preliminary estimates are refined in a detailed energy audit, based on an advanced data collection and interviews with facility operating personnel. Energy experts prepare a detailed report highlighting areas of Significant Energy Use (SEU) and detailed description of corrective measures, which might include no-cost and low-cost interventions such as new equipment settings, repairs to machineries and equipment or the replacement of components with higher-performance technology as well as measures might need investment such as replacement of boilers, compressors, and other utilities. The report is then shared and discussed with the energy team and the industry owners for discussion and debriefing.

In the final phase, the post-audit phase, the implementation of the feasible and recommended measures is conducted. Thereafter, the UNIDO experts, together with the energy team of each industrial facility, monitor and evaluate the energy performance of the implemented corrective measures, and verify the savings achieved. Great relevance is also accorded to the personnel training, which is promoted through webinars sessions on the best energy practices and the proper handling and operation of all equipment.
